Russell has 15 years full-time experience as a public artist and maker with high level skills in design, construction and installation. His projects have included corporate commissions, state and local government commissions and community projects, resulting in a diverse portfolio of street furniture, playgrounds and public art.

Russell is able to deliver through all stages of a public art projects from concept design, through costing, time tabling, fabrication and installation and is excellent at working with built-environment professionals (architects, engineers, landscape architects) and manufacturers. His skills in CAD drawing, solid modeling and 3D rendering have proven particularly useful in visioning work with clients and working with outside manufacturers.

As a hands-on artist/manufacturer Russell has an innate understanding of materials and construction techniques and their appropriateness for public works. Technically, his skills include sculptural work, aluminum castings, pattern making, concrete, mosaic work, metal, timber and the incorporation of kinetics, electronics, custom lighting and solar technology in public works.

Through practical experience, Russell well understands the issues of durability, vandalism and weathering as they relate to public art and design. He follows the Australian Standards to ensure the work is accessible (and safe) for all community members including children, able-bodied adults and people with disabilities. As there isn’t a specific standard for public art, the common practice is to use the Australian Standards for playgrounds. Russell provides a maintenance schedule listing materials used, part numbers and paint colours at the completion of all projects. He has public liability insurance ($10million) and is GST registered. Russell is also up-to-date on issues regarding accessibility and safety in public spaces and is careful to adhere to workplace health and safety guidelines in construction environments.

Russell has a strong interest in the natural world, and has undertaken university level studies in the environment. This interest translates to his public work through references to local flora and fauna as well as demonstrating renewable/low energy technologies (where appropriate) and the use of environmentally sustainable timbers such as recycled/reclaimed or plantation grown.
